CHAPTER 10 - 9 - 8

A long time passed. The room had no windows and the lights were always on, but it seemed like a long time. Tony returned with another lizard and some food and water. Also, a litter box.

I slept for a while and Tony and his friend came back with more food and water.

“Watson?” Holmes’ voice held an uncertain tone that I’d never previously heard from him.

“What?” I answered shortly.

“I’m sorry.” It was clear the words were unfamiliar to his mouth. “Perhaps I should have explained my plan in more detail. Next time, I’ll be sure to give you more warning. I just assumed that you could see the inevitable results of my plan.”

“Well, Holmes, since the inevitable result of THIS plan seems to be certain death, I doubt there’ll be a next time, but I appreciate the sentiment.” I wanted to stay mad at him, but I couldn’t. The fact was that these last few days with Holmes had been the best of my life. If I was honest, I only hated to die because I’d only just begun to live.

I got up from my chair and walked over to Holmes and held out my paw. He took it. “Holmes, I just want to say thank you. Not for getting me killed. I’m still fairly cheesed off about that, but for everything else. I’ve never really had a friend before. I mean a true friend. And I’m glad I met you before I died.”

Holmes shook my paw. “Honesty, Watson, don’t get maudlin. Nobody’s going to die.” Then he softened. “But, thank you. I’m glad to have met you, also.”

More time passed. More food and water. Always Tony and another Lizard. Tony always held the gun on us as the other lizard delivered the food and took away the old plates. No opportunity to escape arose.

I used the litter box. It was so humiliating. Thankfully I was going to be killed soon, so I wouldn’t have to live with the shame very long. Holmes seemed to have superrat bladder control and never even approached it.

It started after the third food delivery. If I live to be a thousand (although it seemed unlikely that I’d live until tomorrow) I’ll never stop being grateful that it was Holmes first. A green fart!

It wasn’t much later that I experienced my own colourful emission, but I did enjoy Holmes being first.

It wasn’t much longer (I, at least, started marking time by the count of green farts), after number 6, I think, that Max opened the door. As always, Tony and his pistol were at his side.

Max examined the slight green tint of the room. “Ah, I see you’ve caught the bug! Excellent, now you’ll be in a better position to understand. I thought you might like to watch the launch that’s going to change the world!”

They led us, at gunpoint, out of the room that had been our prison, and tied us to a steel loop that was set into the wall.
